Abstract
· Research topics: This study aims to examine the effect of information device utilization on depression in older adults and the moderating effect of cognitive function. · Research background: Korea is experiencing one of the fastest aging populations in the world, and depression among older adults has become a significant social issue. The use of information devices has been reported to positively affect depression in older adults. However, this effect may not apply equally to all older adults and is expected to vary depending on cognitive function levels. · Differences from prior research: This study extends prior research on the relationship between information device utilization and depression by empirically examining the moderating effect of cognitive function. Specifically, it investigates whether the effect of information device utilization on depression differs across various levels of cognitive function, showing either negative or positive effects. · Research method: The study utilized data from the 2020 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Analyses including frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed using Stata/MP 17.0. · Research results: The results revealed that a higher frequency of information device utilization significantly lowers depression levels. However, cognitive function moderated this relationship. In groups with high cognitive function, increased utilization of information devices reduced depression levels, while in groups with low cognitive function, higher utilization was associated with increased depression levels. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study demonstrates that the impact of information device utilization on depression in older adults varies depending on cognitive function, highlighting the need for individualized approaches rather than merely enhancing device usage skills. The findings provide critical evidence for designing tailored policies and educational programs aimed at bridging the digital divide and improving mental health in older adults.
