Abstract
This study examines how the pioneering modern dancer Loïe Fuller is portrayed in the film The Dancer (La Danseuse) to elucidate her artistic ethos and demonstrate the enduring modernity of that spirit. The film traces Fuller’s development of a distinctive aesthetic along two central axes: her relentless struggle to perfect her art and the emotional relationships she forges with various figures. The first theme is narrated biographically. The transformation of an unknown artist into a star of the Folies Bergère evokes a sense of wonder in the audience while prompting reflection on the role of talent in an artist’s success. The second theme unfolds in poetic imagery, depicting the supreme beauty and creativity Fuller achieved through diverse relationships and experiences of love. Through unconventional choreography and avant-garde experimentation, Fuller revolutionized the performing arts. Seeking to transcend the body through dance, she embodied the spirit of Art Nouveau, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Her art captivated not only the dance world but also stage directors, filmmakers, and scientists of her time through innovations in lighting and stagecraft. Even today, Fuller continues to inspire practitioners in the decorative arts, photography, fashion, and other creative fields. By vividly reimagining Fuller’s groundbreaking contributions, director Stéphanie Di Giusto revives an artist long consigned to obscurity but also affirms the profound influence her work continues to exert today.
