Abstract
This study aims to touch on the fringe of the dialectal differentiation of Korean by comparing aspects of the realization of vowel raising in Seoul Korean to those of Jeonnam Dialect. It is based on the types and the characteristics of the vowel raising in Korean as follows: At first, there are three types of Vowel Raising in Korean: /e/→/i/, /ə/→/ɨ/, /o/→/u/. They were caused by the principle of close articulation intended reducing the efforts of articulation. Secondly, the occurrence of vowel raising is indebted to the length of vowel functioning as a suprasegmental phoneme in Korean. So, vowel raising mainly occurred in the word-initial with the chroneme. In particular, /e/→/i/, /ə/→/ɨ/ occurred in the word-initial with the chroneme and extended to the non word-initial. Thirdly, three types of vowel raising in Korean are classified with language change and linguistic innovation(J.Milroy 1992). Therefore, /e/→/i/, /ə/→/ɨ/ are regarded as a linguistic innovation which is never accepted as a consensus norm. On the contrary, /o/→/u/ is regarded as a language change which is accepted as a consensus norm. As a result of that, /o/→/u/ is only considered whether it is worthwhile in the dialect borrowing caused by language contact. While, I identified the difference of the degree of realization of vowel raising, Jeonnam Dialect is the core of /e/→/i/, On the contrary, Seoul Korean is the core of /ə/→/ɨ/, /o/→/u/.
