존 웨슬리의 이단 관용정신(catholic spirit, generosity)은 독일의 급진적 경건주의 교회사가인 고트프리드 아놀드의 이단 해석과 일치한다. 웨슬리는 몬타누스, 펠라기우스, 세르베투스를 이단자가 아니라고 주장한다. 그는 삶의 거룩함, 경건성, 성결성을 이단판별의 기준으로 삼는다. 자기와 비슷하거나 메소디스트운동에 이로운 면을 가진 이단 집단에게는 마음을 연다. 삶이 거룩하고 귀신을 내쫓는다면, 견해(opinion)가 다른 자들과 얼마든지 하나가 될 수 있다고 말한다. 교리적 주장, 예배 형태, 교회나 회중에 대한 견해가 어떠하든지, 관용정신으로 하나가 되어야 한다는 것이다. 웨슬리의 이단 관용정신과 이단옹호 태도는 자신이 이단자처럼 취급당하는 데 대한 방어적 동기에서 나온 점을 고려해도 과유불급(過猶不及)으로 보인다. 그리스도의 교회를 혼합주의로 이끄는 위험성을 지니며, 기독인의 관심을 성경적 진리에서 멀어지게 한다. 교회의 진리의 민감성을 앗아간다. 그것은 교회의 성경적 규범이나 진리성이나 사도들의 전통에서 온 것이 아니다. 독일 경건주의 교회사가 아놀드의 관점을 자기 정당화에 도입한 것이다. 웨슬리의 이단 관용정신은 경건주의가 빠지는 동일한 오류 곧 편파성, 주관성, 성령주의―열광주의 함정에 빠진다.
Abstract
The catholic spirit of John Wesley and the interpretation of heresy of Gottfried Arnold of German pietist movement are the same in substance. Wesley claims that Montanus, Pelagius and Servetus are not heretic figures. Wesley’s criteria of heresy judgement is purity and pietic life and holiness, not the biblical or apostolic truth. Wesley opens his heart to the person who has the same opinion and favorable to the methodist movement. Anyone whose life is holy and banish out of the Satan can united and be the one in Christ regardless of doctrinal difference, diversity of the form of worship, church politics. Although the motivation of Wesley’s catholic spirit come out of the defensive efforts against the Church of England, his view and attitude are unacceptable to Christian church because “too much is as bad as too little.” Wesley’s view is dangerous and leads the church of Christ to syncretism, taking Christian concerns and sensitivity of truth out of or from the Biblical truth. Wesley’s generosity on heresy is not fruit of biblical norm of truthness or apostolic tradition. Wesley adopts the German pietists’ view of heresy, especially of Gottfried Arnold and uses it in the defense his own methodist position. Wesley falls into the mistake of the same mistake of the pietism, partiality, subjectivism and holy spiritism-fanaticism.
