Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the properties of Spanish control construction and provide an appropriate analysis for it. The discussion will be developed based on the phase theory, and in particular, the Form Copy(FC) hypothesis proposed by Chomsky(2021) and Chomsky et al.(2023) is applied as a new alternative analysis to control construction. We will first look at previous analyses of control construction. Specifically, the movement theory of control(MTC) proposed by Hornstein(1999, 2001, 2003) will be reviewed, and some problems with the classical control theory, which assumes empty category PRO, will be discussed. In order to resolve the problems of previous hypotheses and attempt a new analysis, we will take a closer look at Chomsky(2021)’s Form Copy hypothesis and explain what problems may arise in applying it to Spanish control construction. Concretely, we point out the problem that the Form Copy cannot be applied due to CP that exists between two identical inscriptions. And in order to solve this, following the hypothesis of Pesetsky and Torrego(2001), we assume that T moves to C and CP loses its phasehood. This contributes to a better understanding of Chomsky(2021)’s Form Copy hypothesis and Spanish control construction.
