Abstract
-Purpose:This study examined parallel trends in self-reported sleep problems and sleep disorder-related treated-patient indicators among Korean adolescents from 2014 to 2024. -Methods:Self-reported sleep indicators were analyzed using the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and treated-patient indicators were analyzed using statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. The insomnia-related code group was G47.0+F51.0 and the sleep disorder-related code group was G47+F51. Treated patients per 100,000 were calculated using mid-year resident registration populations. Combined values were sums of code-specific patient counts and may include duplicate patients. Complex survey design was accounted for, and annual percentage changes with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. The data sources were analyzed separately and presented in parallel. -Results:Mean weekday sleep duration decreased from 6.34 to 6.20 hours, while sleep insufficiency increased from 41.3% to 47.9%. Perceived stress increased from 37.0% to 42.3%, and depressive mood from 26.7% to 27.7%. Treated patients per 100,000 increased from 50.7 to 96.4 for the insomnia-related code group and from 119.3 to 243.0 for the sleep disorder-related code group. The insomnia-related indicator was higher among girls and those aged 15–19 years. -Conclusion:Self-reported sleep problems generally worsened, while treated-patient indicators increased. Because the data sources were not individually linked and differed in target population, age range, measurement concept, and denominator, the findings should not be interpreted as treatment transitions or unmet healthcare needs. School-based survey data and treated-patient data should be considered complementary for assessing population-level sleep trends. Sex- and age-group differences also warrant attention when addressing adolescent sleep health.
