Abstract
Marilynne Robinson’s novel Lila, published in 2014, begins with a 4-5 year-old girl, whois deserted by her parents. The extreme circumstances during the 1930s find people wanderingfrom place to place for work and food, and deserting their own children and other childrenfor the sake of survival without any particular sense of guilt. Young Lila had experiencedbeing cast away and this experience brings her a sense of betrayal and leaves a trauma. Hersense of betrayal makes it impossible for her to trust anybody and to communicate with otherpeople. As a result, she grows up to lack the sociality. She happens to arrive at Gilead andmeet John Ames who is the pastor of a church. As they meet and talk with each other, Lilayearns for the normal life, which she has not experienced before, with her own family. Thetwo characters suffer from loneliness and a sense of loss, yet they have to undergo conflictsdue to the enormous difference of their respective living situations of the past. However, their continuing communication enables them to acknowledge such differences and accepteach other. Lila is able to escape from mistrust, loneliness, and a sense of betrayal and to forma new relationship based on mutual trust and love. Through the story of Lila and Ames,Robinson stresses on the importance of human relationship based on mutual trust and affection, which is as valuable in the modern society as it was in the 1930s. Her message is quiteclear that it is the very foundation of a maturer society in which we put much value not onlyon me but also on others.
