Abstract

This paper examines the change of the politics of Irish drama in post-Ireland and reveals how globalization ― as a cultural phenomenon, an economic process, a mode of rhetoric ― can help us to understand very different kinds of theatre such as McDonagh’s plays. Irish writers have always pointed out the importance of international culture to their work. However, McDonagh could be seen as different from other Irish dramatists in that his work crosses more easily the boundaries between cultural forms. He has tended to reject attempts to relate his work too that of other Irish writers. And the arbitrary manner in which the places in his plays were chosen implies that, for him, plot rather than setting is of primary importance. He isn’t trying to provide an authentic representation of the places he portrays, but instead chooses locations that are appropriate to the stories he wants to tell. By moving beyond the established questions of national identity, McDonagh enables other futures of his work to emerge more clearly and to show us how he is using dramatic form and how his attitude to authorial intention has developed. According to Lonergan’s formula for international success, the key to a play’s “mobility,” apart from its being cheap to produce and easy to transfer from theater to theater, is what Lonergan calls its “reflexive quality”—the ease with which spectators in the world outside Ireland can “relate [the] experience” of the play “to their own preoccupations. I want to assert McDonagh’s drama in relation to some of the influences he has himself cited, considering how a criticism that styles itself as national – as both Irish and British dramatic criticism currently does – may be used to understand the work of such globalized writers as McDonagh.
