Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, in terms of gender politics centered on care, was an event which clearly showed that the infectious disease crisis caused by the spread of the virus did not have the same impact on both men and women worldwide. During the pandemic, it was primarily women who provided the care which the society needed, both at the workplace and at home. In other words, by providing care to those in need of care, including children, the elderly, and the disabled, it was mostly women who made it possible for mankind to survive even in a global infectious disease crisis that was unprecedented in human history. Therefore, if we want to take this pandemic at this point where we are in the midst of an endemic, as an active opportunity to transform society into one that is ‘care-centered’, one of the things we need to keep in mind above all else is to overcome gender inequality in care. By achieving the ‘democratization of care’ through the equal distribution of care and ‘defeminization of care’, we have to break away from the pre-pandemic prejudice that considered caring only as ‘women's work’ and accept that caring is the work of all of mankind on Earth. Moreover, we have to explore the meaning of ‘the local’ as a place and a field of life in the transition to a care-centered society, but it is difficult to find studies focusing on ‘the local’ as a place where our daily lives are concretely happening. It is necessary to view the local as a specific place for human-to-human encounters with the ‘localization of care’ as an important step in that direction.
