Abstract
This paper aims to introduce the spho a theory which was fully developed and systematized by the great grammarian-philosopher Bhart hari in his V kyapad ya. A word or a sentence considered as a single meaningful symbol is called spho a, the concept of which was developed as the ultimate ground of the linguistic expression and understanding. The articulated sounds(n da) used in linguistic discourse are merely the means by which the symbol is revealed, but the word(spho a) takes on the properties of them. This paper discusses in which way and to what extent the nature of sound affects our cognition of spho a. It also deals with the reason Bhart hari introduced the concept of pratibh 'intuition' into his linguistic theory. He set forth a theory that pratibh is the meaning of the sentence. Finally, it talks about the philosophical view of the traditional Indian scholars on the process of expression or understanding of spho a.
