Abstract

This article reconstructs an account of edification in the Human Way (人道) by focusing on the bamboo-strip text Xing Zi Ming Chu (性自命出) excavated from the Guodian (郭店) Chu tombs. It first disentangles two chains articulated in the text—“tian–ming–xing” (天–命–性) and “xing–qing–dao/yi” (性–情–道⋅義)—and elucidates how they are connected through the operations of xin (心), especially the forming intent (心志) and reflective thinking (思). By locating the inception of dao (道) not in xing (性) but in qing (情) and its completion in yi (義), the text’s focus emerges not as fixing a metaphysical substrate but as an edification-centered process operating in the phase of manifestation (發). The analysis then shows how qing is concretized through resonance with external things (物) and through the mind’s selective activity, and how ritual and music (禮樂) are systematized as echniques of the heart–mind (心術) that regulate the entering and exiting (出入) of qing. Li is drawn up from qing yet instituted in accordance with circumstances (事情) and configurations (勢), yue secures trustworthiness (信) through the mutual transmutation of sound and mind, generates a temporal rhythm of “returning to the good and renewing the beginning” (反善復始), and thereby facilitates the manifestation of virtue (德). On this basis, the Xing Zi Ming Chu proposes an ethics of healing as a recurrent circuit of “edification–ritual-and-music–habituation” (教化–禮樂–習), oriented toward the stabilization of affect and self-recovery. In conclusion, by cultivating the authenticity of qing and the reflective work of xin under the disciplining forms of li–yue on the Heaven-bestowed ground of life (生), the text articulates a program of recovery forged in an age of warfare and precarity—one whose therapeutic implications can be extended to contemporary moral education, communal ethics, and artistic–ritual practice.
