Abstract

After the independence, Gandhi did his best to prevent the bloodshed in Delhi, Punjab, and Kashmir. He publicly insisted to all—Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs—to put down their arms, purify themselves, and love one another. He criticized the violence inflicted by both parties, arguing that two wrongs did not make a right and that the Muslims’ brutality in no way served as a justification for the Hindus’ brutality. However, Gandhi’s words provoked some of Hindu fundamentalists, and Gandhi became the target of murder. Gandhi advised that, in order for Pakistan and India to live as peaceful neighbors, either the two countries meet directly and negotiate matters or solve the issues with the help of a fair and just mediator. Gandhi was concerned about material loss and human casualties. Even in the days of nuclear weapons, Gandhi believed that non-violence was the only power that could defeat violence itself. However, no one was willing to listen to such a solitary voice. Mahatma Gandhi passionately embraced all hardships that came throughout his lifetime and boldly followed his heart, spreading and himself embodying his message of truth and love. During his final days, he spent his life with the ill, the poor, and the unemployed. History will forever remember Gandhi’s efforts for India’s independence and for the liberation of Indians from prejudice and hate due to religious and caste conflicts. Although his body encountered death by a bullet, his search for freedom and realization of love will forever be a light for the world.
