Abstract
This study attempts to look into the NP complements of the preposition “Yi(以)” as focus expression in Analects of Confucius. At first, the NP complements of the preposition “Yi(以)” are analyzed to have the structure of ‘S(np)+VP+以+NP’ and ‘S(np)+NP+以+VP’. The NP of preposition “Yi(以)” in ‘S(np)+VP+以+NP’ structure can be assigned [+Prominent] duo to its linguistic aspects in sentential final position, being duplicated, being interrogative sentence, or being unique. This implies that this structure should be translated as ‘VP하되 NP로(써) 하라(/다)’. The ‘NP’ of preposition “Yi(以)” in ‘S(np)+NP+以+VP’ structure has a feature of [+Contrastive]. This [+Contrastive] is given by their linguistic aspects in sentential position, being symmetric, parallel, or contrastive. This contrastiveness cannot be translated into Korean because there is no difference between Korean and Chinese in terms of word order. The only way to put it in Korean is to put stress on the NP complements of the ‘S(np)+NP+以+VP’ structure.
