Abstract
There has been a consensus that technological progress or accumulation of technological capabilities is a critical factor for the sustainable economic growth. At the same vein, the literature on China’s technological capability have rapidly increased recently. However, only a paucity of studies have focused on China’s scientific research capabilities, which might buttress China’s techno-economic competency. In order to fill in the research gap, this study tries to explore the micro level structure and network of China’s scientific research, which should be taken into account in evaluating China’s scientific research capabilities but has largely been neglected in the previous studies. This study applied the method of bibliometric analysis to the SCI journal DB provided by the ISI Web of Science, in order to examine the degree of the academic leadership that China (or Chinese scientists) exerts and the characteristics of the international research network that China has formulated with other countries.
