Abstract

Centered on Korean and Japanese, by collecting linguistic forms signifying the meaning of request respectively and analysing them in the view of semantics and pragmatics, I have considered their differences and similarities in this study. As a result, there were similarities as follows. It appeared that「동사의 ます형+∼て」in Japanese and 「∼아·어(요)/∼아·어 봐(요)」in Korean have the significance of request, indirect order, sugestion. Among the requesting expressions in Japanese and Korean 1) the interrogative form leaving the room of choice to the opponent 2) the negative interrogative form leaving the choice of refusal to opponent while expecting affirmative answer from him/her 3) the case requesting to the opponent using the expression signifying speaker's hope/desire have indirect illocutionary force in the view of semantics and pragmatics. This, which can be considered in 「Cooperative Principle」of Grice(1975) and 「Politeness Principle」of Leech(1983), is a polite expression considering the opponent. In addition it was found that there is requesting expression in Japanese and Korean expressed with performative verb which causes an action to be done at the same time when an expression is made such as ‘부탁한다(お願いします)’. And there was following deference too. It appeared that 「∼てちょうだい」「∼てくれ」「∼てください」in Japanese have the significance of request, indirect order, sugestion, however「∼아·어 줘」「∼아·어 주세요」「∼아·어 주십시오」in Korean have only the significance of request. This is caused by the reason why Japanese is focusing on acceptance of deed while Korean is more concentrating on acceptance of favor. In other words, it can be deemed that Koreans are outstandingly inclined to use 「∼아·어 줘」「∼아·어 주세요」「∼아·어 주십시오」in case the acceptance of favor is obvious. And whereas there is no case signifying the meaning of request with using recommendation expression in Japanese, there was the case that has the meaning of request in Korean only in the expression of 「stem of verb+ㅂ시다」. This is not only because it signifies speaker's will but because it is a will affecting the opponent.
