Abstract

Error Correction of Part One of Chapter Two in Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi- Application of Inscriptions on Bone and Tortoise Carapace -Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi(說文解字) has been a powerful dictionary since it was publishend in A.D.121. After the year 1899, ‘Inscriptions on Bone and Tortoise Carapace’ were recovered over one hundred years, and a great many scholars researched into the error of Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi. So its authority in the definition of the meaning of words and the analysis of the shape of a character has been damaged, but so far its position has been important to us.If Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi had not kept the archaic style - ‘Xiao-Zhuan(小篆)’‘Zhou-Wen(文)’‘Gu-Wen(古文)’ and so on - it would bi almost impossible to research into ‘Inscriptions on Bone and Tortoise Carapace’ and ‘Inscription on a Stone Monument’.Part one of chapter two in Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi are composed of three hundreds sixty nine characters of ‘Xiao-Zhuan’ and thirty four characters of ‘Chong-Wen(重文)’. This pater searched for error in Shuo-Wen-Jie-Zi by comparing it with Jia-Gu-Wen-Jie-Zi-Gu-Lin(甲骨文字林). Error were then classified according to their sources.The analysis identified five sources of errors as follows :
