Abstract
This paper investigates how Missionary Universities have been built and developed and then examines the influence they had on Chinese society. Missionary Universities in China were established to be a developed Missionary school system for missionaries to do their mission work. Even though there was resistance, Missionary Universities in China introduced modern sciences to China and made an opportunity to foster a person to be competent. They had several effects on Chinese society, such as a suggestion of new teaching methods and an improvement of rights and interests. Even though there were Missionary Universities for only the briefest period among the history of Education in China, they had a strong effect on the existence and development of Chinese Universities. Contrary to prior thinking that in China, Missionary Universities were thought to be the result of imperialist aggression, this paper concentrates upon the great contribution of Missionary Universities to social evolution and higher education. Together, with this paper, we can gain a foothold in the further comparative study between Missionary Universities in Korea and Missionary Universities in China.
