Abstract

The Japanese Occupation and Literary Works in Indonesia Enough of historians and political scientists providing most of our understanding of these turbulent times. They often focus attention on institutional and political problematic and eschew the people's feelings regarding the same issues. Undoubtedly, literary works during the Japanese occupation could enrich our perception of the occupation from a wide variety of perspectives. The ambivalent attitudes towards propaganda literature in each region also need to be examined. In Indonesia, this ambivalence emanates from two conflicting concepts of the Japanese colonialists: a liberator as well as a conqueror. The tentative findings prove my assumption that political discourse superseded the subjective experiences of the people in the area. Accordingly, literary works to some extent define realities in different ways. People's experiences during the Japanese Occupation in Southeast Asia reflect not only the propaganda material but also the people's imagination on nationalism and new cultural awareness on spatial concept and identities as reflected by literary works from Indonesia and Malaysia.
