개화기 외국인의 국어 음운 분야 연구

이 글의 목적은 개화기 외국인이 남긴 국어의 음운 분야 연구 결과를 분석하고 이들이 이룬 국어 연구의 시대적 의미를 고찰하는 데 있다. 이 글에서는 개화기를 외국인의 연구 활동을 기준으로 1830년에서 1945년 사이로 잡았다. 이 시기 활동한 외국인은 크게 구미계와 일본계로 구분할 수 있는데 시기적으로 전기와 후기로 나눌 수 있다. 이들의 연구 대상과 항목 배열 순서는 문자와 음가, 음소, 음운 현상, 운소, 형태음소론 등으로 이루어져 있다. 문자에 자국어로 음가를 제시하는 방식은 개화기 내내 지속된 기술 방식이었다. 음소 체계는 어휘의 의미 변별이라는 기술적 방식보다는 기존 문헌어의 기술 내용을 첨가하는 방식으로 이루어졌으며 후기로 가면서 자국의 문법으로 국어의 체계를 규정하려는 태도를 보였다. 또한 후기로 갈수록 다양한 국어의 음운 현상이 제시되었지만 대부분 체언을 대상으로 이루어졌으며 활용형에서 발생하는 음운 현상은 거의 다루어지지 못하였다. 개화기 외국인의 국어 연구 활동을 보는 관점은 선교와 식민지 지배의 목적을 가졌기 때문에 실용성을 띨 수밖에 없었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 외국인이 남긴 결과물을 통하여 시대적 특징을 살피고 이를 바탕으로 새로운 국어의 연구 방법론 모색에 관심을 쏟아야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the phonological field’s results that foreigners left in Gaehwagi Korean, and to review periodic characters they made in the phonological field. We deal with period from 1830 to 1945 for Gaehwagi. Foreigners researching Korean language in this period can devide European and Japanese generally. Their research objects and the order of item arrangement is letters and their phonetic values, phonemes, phonological phenomena and morphophonemics. They marked phonetic values of Korean letters by their own language. For phoneme they cited descriptive contents of exiting documents in early days, and described Korean phonological system by their grammar in latter days. And then they suggested various phonological phenomena of Korean language, but they just didn’t explain not phonological phenomena nominal forms but phonological phenomena in conjugated form. Their study just was practical that had purpose as a missionary work and a colonial control. Nevertheless we have to study a period character by their research results, and have to be concerned new study methodology on the basis of this study.
