초록
Trade and missionary work fitted well into the reciprocality of both Vietnam and the West. The much-delayed Western missionary advance into Vietnam in the 16th century was not because of internal factors such as Vietnam's reluctance, persecution and internal disturbances, but mainly because of the lack of missionaries serving at the congregation of missionaries in East Asia. Despite the belated mission works by Western missionaries, preaching the gospel had already been started by local Vietnamese who had converted to Christianity in the process of diplomacy or foreign trades with Macao or Malacca. Unlike the subjugators in Malacca the Westerners in Vietnam during the 16th century limited their activities to trade and missionaries. As such, for the North and South Dynasty of Vietnam that needed weapons and luxury goods for its kings and nobles the presence of Westerners including missionaries was critical because the incomes from domestic commerce and harbor dues accrued was indispensible for its economic development. In the meantime, Vietnam couldn't take any sidebetween trade and mission, and there was hardly no conflict between Catholic doctrines and traditional culture. Furthermore, because there were no antipathy toward Catholic except a few special groups such as monks, the advancement of missionary was much awaited instead.
