본 연구는 거시적 관점에서 미국의 중국정치연구 현황을 살펴봄으로써 그에 대한 이해를 토대로 국내 중국정치연구의 발전 방향을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존에 많이 다루어져왔던 개별 연구 성과에 대한 평가는 논외로 하고, 보다 본질적인 측면에서 지역연구로서 중국정치연구의 학문적 위상과 현실적 대안을 검토하는 데 초점을 두었다. 특히 지역연구의 다양한 목적과 기능 중에서 주로 ‘이론화’를 추구한 미국의 중국연구가 정치학의 이론 발전에 그다지 기여하지 못했다는 점에서 미국 정치학 분야에서 좋은 평가를 받지 못한다는 사실은 미국의 중국연구를 추종하는 한국의 중국정치 연구자들에게 큰 도전이 되고 있다고 지적했다. 그리고 학자들 간의 분업 및 협업을 통해 학술공동체를 활성화함으로써 개별 연구 활동을 진작시키는 방안을 하나의 대안으로 제시했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the new direction in the study of Chinese politics in Korea by analyzing the current status and major developments of China studies in the U.S. with a macro perspective. Setting aside the assessment of the individual studies, this work rather focuses on evaluating the current academic status of the China studies as an area study and on seeking the practical alternatives on fundamental issues. Among others, this work points out that Korean scholars studying Chinese politics need to know that the study of Chinese politics in the U.S. has been wanting because it is mainly interested in theoretical generalization, yet it has not contributed to the theoretical development of its mother discipline, political science. This fact constitutes a clarion call for Korean China scholars who have seemingly adopted the research trend of China studies in the U.S. Finally, this work suggests that revitalization of academic community through division of labor and cooperation among scholars will be a new avenue for encouraging individual studies.
