Abstract

In the early chapters of the Book Three of Summa contra gentiles, which deal with the goal of creation, Thomas Aquinas attempts a systematic explanation of the ontological meaning of evil. He does so because it is necessary to clarify the ontological status of evil if a theological thesis that all created beings , in their own ways, intend the good as goal can be universally valid. While offering a translation of the chapters 4‐9 of the Book Three of Summa contra gentiles, where Aquinas deals with the problem of evil, this paper aims at an analysis of the text to arrive at a better understanding of what he does philosophically. Thomas’ argument is that evil occurs 'praeter intentionem' and does not exist as an essence or nature. The reason why it is impossible to intend evil itself, whether it be intended by nature or the human agent, is that evil as a privation is nothing other than a mere accident of the positive reality of nature. While inheriting faithfully a traditional theory defining evil as privation, Aquinas refines the theory of evil within his system of Scholastic philosophy by offering solutions to various problems raised in objections based upon his conceptual distinction between 'evil of something' and 'evil simply.' Furthermore, he opens up a new horizon for understanding the relationship between ontological evil and moral evil by analyzing precisely the distinctiveness of evil in human action.
