본고는 이냐시오 영성 전통에서 바라본 환대의 영성에 대한 연구이다. 이냐시오 영성 전통 안에서 환대라는 주제를 다룬 연구는 매우 드물다. 그 이유는 무엇일까? 일반적으로 ‘환대’라는 주제는 찾아오는 이방인을 맞이한다는 측면에 주안점을 두고 연구되었다. 그러나 이냐시오 영성은 매우 사도적 특성을 지니고 있기 때문에, 일반적으로 수용적 측면을 더 강하게 띄는 ‘환대’라는 용어와는 어울리지 않았다는 점에서 한 가지 이유를 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다. 이 연구는 오히려 이 점에 주목한다. 즉, 환대의 영성을 이냐시오 영성의 사도적 특성에 바탕을 두고 고찰하여, 이냐시오 영성 전통에서 고찰한 환대의 영성은 기존의 그리스도교 영성 전통에서 바라본 환대의 영성과는 매우 다르게 ‘파견’에서 환대의 영성의 고유성을 밝히고자 한 것이다. 이 주제를 고찰하기 위하여 본고는 ‘환대’라는 용어가 지닌 역동적 의미를 먼저 살핀 후, 이 역동성이 이냐시오의 삼위일체 하느님 체험과 어떻게 관련되어 드러났는지에 초점을 두고 그의 『자서전』을 고찰할 것이다. 이것을 바탕으로 『영신수련』을 고찰함으로써 『자서전』에 나타난 환대의 역동성이 『영신수련』에서는 어떻게 이냐시오의 사도적 영성에 반영되었는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 이어서 『영신수련』에 나타난 환대의 사도적 특성을 실제로 초기 예수회원들의 이해를 고찰한다. 마지막으로, 사도적 특성을 지닌 이냐시오의 환대의 영성이 오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 이 시대에서는 특히 이 사회의 최전선으로 파견됨에 있다는 것을 제시함으로써, 그 동안 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 않았던 이냐시오 영성 전통 안에서의 환대의 영성의 의미를 새롭게 조명해 볼 것이다.
Abstract
This article does research on the spirituality of hospitality seen through the lens of Ignatian spiritual tradition. It is hard to find research about such a theme. What would be the reasons? One of the reasons is that the theme of hospitality has been studied mainly focusing on the receiving nature of hospitality. This keeps most studies about hospitality at a distance from a perspective of an apostolic spirituality whose primary focus is put on the nature of being sent. Paradoxically enough, however, this point opens to us a new perspective on the spirituality of hospitality through Ignatian spirituality which is very apostolic. In order to look into this theme, I will first expound the dynamic of the term, “hospitality.” Then, I will explore the Autobiography of Ignatius of Loyola in order to explain how such a dynamic is related Ignatius’ experience of the Trinitarian God. I will show that the spirituality of hospitality in Ignatian spiritual tradition flows from the Trinitarian God. Then, I will move to the Spiritual Exercises in order to explore how Ignatius’ experience of hospitality in the Autobiography is reflected in apostolic spirituality in the Spiritual Exercises. Then, I will illustrate how the first Jesuits, who were formed by the Spiritual Exercises, understood and lived the apostolic characteristic of hospitality found in the Spiritual Exercises. Finally, I will conclude this article by noting that the distinctiveness of the spirituality of hospitality seen through the lens of the Ignatian spiritual tradition is a radically apostolic one which is grounded in being sent to frontiers so that all people should be, and are, welcomed.
