헨리 나우웬의 영적작업의 역사적 배경에 대한 연구: 그리스도교 신비주의 전통에 대한 관심을 중심으로

본 논문은 기존의 헨리 나우웬 영성에 대한 사목신학적, 그리스도교 교육학적인 접근 대신 역사맥락적인 연구를 통해서 헨리 나우웬 영적 작업의 역사적인 배경을 이해하는데 초점을 둔다. 본 논문에서는 헨리 나우웬의 영적 작업의 외적 요인으로서 근대 이후 세속화의 과정에서 드러난 사회적, 종교적 상황의 변화와 1960년대 다양한 영성운동으로 표출된 미국사회의 영적 추구의 변화를 분석했다. 그는 영적 추구에 있어 개인들의 모색이 중요해진 시대적인 변화를 수용하면서도 내면에 대한 관심이 영성의 ‘상업화’와 종교 체험에만 몰입하는 ‘영성화’로 흘러가지 않도록 노력했다. 한편 내적 요인으로서 제2차 바티칸 공의회를 통해서 하느님 계시의 인격성, 성사의 신비, 인간과 사목 대한 가톨릭 교회의 변화된 신학적인 입장이 헨리 나우웬의 영적 작업 안에 어떻게 반영되었는지 살폈다. 헨리 나우웬이 자신의 영적 작업을 통해 그리스도교 신비주의 전통의 영적 수련에 관심을 기울이고 이를 재해석하려고 했던 것은 가톨릭 교회의 변화를 수용하고 이전과는 다른 시대 상황 속에서 현대인들이 느끼는 영적 갈망에 응답하려는 구체적인 노력이었다.
Abstract
This paper examines Henri Nouwen's spiritual works through the historical-contextual approach rather than from the commonly used pastoral theological approach or Christian educational approach. As external factors, it analyzes the social and religious changes caused by secularization and the changed spiritual pursuit of the American society reflected in various spiritual movements in the 1960s. While embracing individuals' spiritual exploration on their inner self, he tried not to let such concerns turn into 'commercialization' of spirituality or 'spiritualization'. As internal factors, it examines how his spiritual works reflect the changed theological stance after the Second Vatican Council including Divine Revelation, Sacrament, Pastrol and Christian Anthropology. His interests in the spiritual exercises of Christian mysticism and attempts to reinterpret them were his concrete efforts to respond to the spiritual thirst of modern people while accepting the changes in the Catholic church.
