Abstract

According to Aristotle and Lucianos, historiography is understood as a genre which aims to teach and benefit readers through the report of what really happened (bruta facta), while poetry aims to entertain readers. From the perspective of Aristotle and Lucianos, historians should not employ literary techniques belonging to poetry for the purpose of entertaining readers. However, historians used to introduce literary motifs that belong to poetry (tragedy in particular) so that they may attract readers to their work and effectively communicate lessons from the event. Polybius called this technique of ancient historians 'tragic history,' which is a historiographical style. I already wrote a short paper on this subject, highlighting a few typical characteristics of this historiographical style. In this paper, I would like to introduce another element of 'tragic history' style, that is, 'ophsimathia(= late learning)'. I first explore several works by the representative Greek tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides), focusing on 'late learning' motif of 'tragic history' style, and then try to explain how Herodotus employed this motif of 'late learning' in his historiography. This study demonstrates that historiography and narrative are not exclusively separated from each other, but rather are closely related. Particularly, attempting to read ancient historiography in relation to ancient narrative like Greek tragedy, this study attempts to show a way to avoid criticism that it is problematic to apply modem literary criticism to ancient historiography.
