'여선외사女仙外史'의 유민遺民 의식

청淸 왕조 초기에 ‘유민遺民’으로 살았던 사대부 여웅呂熊이 지은 장편소설 《여선외사女仙外史》는 명明 왕조 초기인 건문建文 연간(1399-1402)에 일어난 연왕燕王 의 ‘정난靖難’과 영락永樂 18년(1420) 산동山東에서 당새아唐塞兒라는 여성이주도했던 농민기의農民起義를 엮어서 허구적으로 구성한 작품이다. 작자는 연왕의‘정난’을 ‘찬탈簒奪’로 규정하고 당새아 집단을 ‘천자를 호위[勤王]’하는 충의지사忠義之士로 칭송하면서 양측의 대결을 서술했는데, 여기에 신화적 상상과 도술道術 등의 오락적 요소를 덧씌우면서 다시 천문과 지리, 병법, 법률, 경학經學, 의학醫學 등을 두루 아우르는 작자 자신의 ‘재학才學’을 과시했다. 이 작품의 주제에 대해 현대의 많은 연구에서 대개 ‘포충극반褒忠殛叛’의 윤리관과‘반청복명反淸復明’이라는 ‘유민’의 염원을 담았다고 설명하고 있다. 그러나 필자는 작자 여웅이 비록 부친의 유훈遺訓에 따라 청 왕조에서 정식으로 벼슬길에들어서지는 않았지만, 이미 안정화된 청 왕조의 ‘신민臣民’이었기 때문에 그에게서‘반청복명’의 유민의식을 찾는 것은 무의미하며, 이에 따라 이 작품도 평화롭고풍요로운 청 왕조의 치세를 위해 작자의 광범한 학식을 바탕으로 구성한 일종의이상적 모델을 제시한 작품으로 보아야 한다고 생각한다.
Abstract
The Nüxian waishi女仙外史 by Lüxiong呂熊 is a fictional mixture of two events─ ─the treason in the name of jingnan靖難 the cleaning up the petty vassals of the empire in 1399-1402 and the peasant revolt red by a heroine Tangsaier唐塞兒 at Shandong山東 in 1420. The author Lüxiong known as a yimin遺民 the member of a of a ruined Ming明 dynasty people described the confrontation between the two sides, defining jingnan as a traitorous takeover of the Throne, but praising the Tang’s group as loyal and righteous. He also added entertainment elements such as mythical imagination and the Taoist magic to the narrative description, and again showed off his caixue才學 the ‘talent and learning’ encompassing astronomy and geography, military law, medicine and jingxue經學 the knowledge of Confucian scriptures etc. Many modern commentators explain that the theme of this work reflects the national ethics of praising loyal subjects and punishing traitors and the yimin’s general desire to oppose the Qing淸 Dynasty and restore the Ming Dynasty. But in my opinion, it is pointless to seek any consciousness of yimin from Lüxiong, as he was already a chenmin臣民 the people of the Qing Dynasty, although he did not serve a government post in accordance with his father's will. This work, therefore, should also be viewed as presenting a kind of ideal model formed on the basis of the author's extensive knowledge for the peaceful and rich rule of the Qing Dynasty.
