Abstract
This research focuses on the production reformation of the post network society. This research confirms that the peer production model found in the software industry is an adoption of the open innovation theory. And this research introduces an empirical method to verify this model. In the software industry, many companies are applying an open source strategy, which opens the source codes, their core competence. This irrational strategy shows the paradigm shift. In the post network society, the bounded rationality has been partially resolved, and the marginal cost can be as low as zero. This research takes peer production as the production model of the post network society. In the post network economy, most industries have a lower asset specificity and a higher complexity of production, like the software industry. Therefore, the peer production model is more suitable than market and firm production models. In addition, peer production can promote discontinuous open innovation in the whole industry. In this research, we qualitatively analyze the empirical data of four open source software projects and demonstrated the productivity gains by introducing peer production. We prove that the productivity gains are based in the value creation from open innovation, where the projects can couple internal and external inputs and ideas.
