Abstract

Previous studies on Yeongpyeong in the Northwest Sea included the geography of the island, the economy and history of the traditional Yellow Carvina (Chogi) P`asi, the folklore about the legendary General Im Kyungup and Pungeogut, among others. Later, the literature extended to cover the Yeongpyeong region with respect to the issues of the Northern Limit Line. In addition, some essays appeared to deal with the geopolitical consequences of the military conflicts between the two Koreas and the bombardments of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010 on the inter-Korean relationships. Especially, the military collision occurred in 2002 near the Northen Limit Line in front of Yeonpyeong Island was later filmed and drew large audiences. As a result. some movie reviews became circulated in the movie audience, too. It is, thus, clear that the 2018 summit conferences between the North and South must have exerted a great impact on the future lives in the Yeonpyeong region. This essay attempts to review the past lives in the Yeonpyeong region and forecast the future of the island under the recent peaceful developments on the Korean peninsula. In order to achieve these goals, this piece traces the major events those have had effects on the past and future of the lives in the Yeonpyeong region. These include the developments of administration and the changes of social structure in the Yeonpyeong region. In addition, this study examines the records of various military conflicts between the two Koreas on Yeongpyeong and near the tense western sea border. Finally, this research paper ascertains the changes in the lives of the Yeongpyeong residents after the 2018 summit conferences of South-North Korea. The Yeongpyeong region is expected to have extraordinary benefits from the establishment of the Korean peace system in the long run. This study tries not to be based on the secondary analyses or explanations provided by the previous literatures. Especially, the number of relevant studies on the military conflicts in the Yeonpyeong region is quite few but they have tended to be filled with the politically oriented explanations instead of solid data analyses. This essay attempts to trace the actual records so as to ascertain the true picture of the military collisions near the Northern Limit Line in front of the island. This piece sticks to make reference to a newspaper in order to get the information about what exactly occurred and when. This may be the only source that we can get access to the relevant information. Generally speaking, such restrictive military documents are not open to the academia and the public.
