Abstract
· Research topics: This study explores the relationship between grit and life satisfaction among high school students, theoretically examining the role of self-esteem in this process, and empirically verifying whether self-esteem acts as a mediating variable or functions as a moderating variable. · Research background: To deepen the understanding of psychological resources during adolescence and to provide meaningful implications for the expansion of theoretical explanations and the concretization of practical intervention strategies, a systematic investigation into the role of self-esteem as a mediating and moderating variable is necessary. · Differences from prior research: Unlike previous studies that verified self-esteem as either a mediating variable or a moderating variable, this study enhances both internal and external validity by examining whether self-esteem performs both roles simultaneously, thus exploring the process of effect occurrence and conditional changes of the same variable. · Research method: This study employed mediation and moderation regression analyses using the 5th wave (2022) data from the first-year middle school panel of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. · Research results: Self-esteem played a significant partial mediating role in the relationship between grit and life satisfaction, but its moderating role was found to be statistically insignificant.
