Abstract

The Generational Argument in late 1930's has important meaning which is distinguished from general Generational argument; one appeared before modern literature and the other after emancipation. First, it showed two horizons which is different from literary thought. Second, it worked as political discourse in the process of building nation literature after emancipation. As it was scrutinized on this study the Generational Argument in late 1930 showed conflict between KAPF and non ideological Literature group such as Kuin-hoi(九人會) and it was accompanied by mature of journalism and rebuilding literary circles of Korea. This argument appeared to be the conflict between the old and the new but it was the dissension between writers and critics when it comes to the subject of argument. In addition, the argument was based on two distinct literary views; theory of reflection and that of expression. The concept of “purity" need to be focused because of its differen meaning. Yu Jin-O(兪鎭午) used it as “not having any non literary ambition" while Kim Dong-ri(金東里) expand its meaning to understanding of “autonomy of literature" The new generation's literary view based on the “autonomy of literature" was revealed through this argument and Kim continued to build up subjective aesthetic consciousness through it. Criticizing existing generation for not having any philosophy, Kim stressed subjective thought. He provided his idiosyncratic “realism" and it was romantic literary concept founded on absoluteness of subjectivity. This fatal literary view which advocated absoluteness of literature could stand against Modern when the fascism became a prominent figure.
