I analyse Seo Yu-Ku(徐有榘)’s economics of rural life(林園經濟學) in terms of space-thinking. The Encyclopedia of Rural Life(林園經濟志) represents Seo’s thought on the autonomous rural life. The Encyclopedia of Rural Life contains a wide range of articles about living space in rural area, among which I especially pay attention to those of Yi-Wun-Ji(怡雲志) which is one part of The Encyclopedia of Rural Life. I analyse how the independent living of Chosun literati Seo planned is represented as a living space and where the spacial representation is oriented. In particular, it is noted that Seo’s space-thinking has prospects for publicity. Seo’s project for independent living in rural area is not limited to caring for private life, but expanded to constituting autonomous public sphere in rural area. Seo paid particular attention to form the voluntary associations for collaboration, local autonomous education and publishing. In this respect, the subject of economics of rural life is that of convergence of the private and the public.
