Abstract
Reification has been understood in the tradition of German social philosophy as a concept that captures the core of the pathologies characteristically appearing in the post-modern capitalist society. However, as the reformulations of reification centered on the moments of critique of instrumental reason, the primary goal of critique of reification, i. e. critique of the pathologies of capitalist society, seems to have faded. This paper reformulates the concept of reification on a new basis, separate from the critique of instrumental reason. The goal of this paper is to revigorate the primary goal of critique of reification, i. e. critique of the pathologies of capitalist society, by restoring the relationship between the concept of reification and ‘the economical’. This work is carried out in a way that inherits Marx’s critique of political economy and expands it to meet the contemporary prerequisites of social criticism, defining the subject area of critique of reification to pathologies arising from capitalistic production and consumption.
