Abstract
Pungnapt-toseong is an earthen fortification site built at the edge of the Hangang River. The excavation results revealed that the site was Wiraeseong in Hanam, the capital of Baekje in the Hanseong Phase recorded in historical sources. This is the earliest extant earthen fortification site to have been discovered in Korea to date. The purpose of this article is to examine the construction method of the earthen rampart of the site using excavated data to have been accumulated to date. The stratigraphic profile shows that the wall was constructed in four-step chronological processes. In order to build the rampart, the foundation, which was leveled by using various methods, began to be built from the late 3rd century AD. The U-shaped foundation trenches built by the Jicao(基槽) technique, the wall construction method in ancient China, were installed in several sectors. After completing the building of the foundation, the builder began to construct the ladder or trapezoid-shaped central earthwork. In order to build the harden rampart, it was piled up with soils with different elements by using the stamped earth technique; and the slope of the inner wall was covered by highly viscous clay layers. It is hard to know the accurate reason either the lost of the rampart by natural hazards, or the necessity of extension of the fortification, the central earthwork was rebuilt by covering earths on its surface. It seems that the first rebuilt work began immediately after the completing the work of the first built earthwork. It can be supposed that the work of the first rebuilt wall was completed in the early 4th century AD. The second rebuilt work began in the mid-4th century AD. The wooden building materials, silt layers, and plant remains were identified in the inner walls. The edge of the inner and outer walls were enclosed with stone walls.
