Abstract

The Scythian beast O-type motif indicates that from the 9th to the 7th century BCE, extensive exchanges existed throughout the entire Scytho-Siberian cultural sphere, stretching from Siberia to the northern Caucasus and Central Asia. However, by around the 7th century BCE, the eastern and western regions became divided, forming a network where each area actively interacted with external regions. The ‘hybrid animal motif’ known as the griffin reveals the nature of 7th-century BC exchanges. The western site of Kelermes maintained close mutual influence with Urartu and Assyria south of the Caucasus. Artifacts excavated from this site—such as composite animals combining sheep heads and eagles, chimeras, and lion-based griffins—clearly demonstrate that these were products of complex interregional interactions where external cultural elements merged with Scythian ones, as well as commissioned productions tailored to the demands of Scythian nobility. Cultural influence is also evident in the bronze daggers and swords of the Nansangun type from the eastern Scytho-Siberian cultural sphere during the same period. This is because the Nansangun-type bronze daggers and swords clearly follow the weapon forms of the Karasuk culture and the Arzhan 1 and Arzhan 2 sites, showing distinct Siberian cultural influence. However, despite the O-shaped beast motifs and T-shaped deer motifs engraved on these artifacts resembling the style of Arzhan 2, their detailed expression (e.g., unclear depictions of eyes, legs, and horns) and production techniques show distinct differences from the principles and techniques of the Siberian ‘Scythian animal style’. This suggests that core cultural representations were reinterpreted and localized to fit the traditions and production environment of the local society. In the 6th-5th centuries BCE, the Pazyryk culture of the Altai region within the Scytho-Siberian cultural sphere developed its own unique Altai hybrid animal motifs (e.g., an eagle's head on a horse's body, deer antlers). Animal combat motifs and lion-griffins indicate that by around the 4th century BCE, active exchanges occurred between the Altai region of the Siberian highlands and Persia. In conclusion, the Scythian animal motif network underwent a broad shared phase from the 9th to 7th centuries BCE. By the 7th century BCE, external exchanges and regionalization between eastern and western regions progressed. Subsequently, around the 5th to 4th centuries BCE, direct exchanges between Altai and Persia emerged, demonstrating that its characteristics changed over time.
