Abstract

This study compared the software educational effects of a lecture-based class and a project-based learning (PBL) class in a liberal arts software course for humanities students. Three domains, SW recognition, SW attitude, and SW literacy, and nine subdomains were measured using pre- and post-course surveys. Within- and between-group differences were analyzed using nonparametric tests and ANCOVA with pre-test scores as covariates. Both instructional formats produced significant improvements in overall SW recognition and SW literacy, and most subdomains showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups, indicating a comparable level of basic software educational effectiveness. However, for the SW Interest subdomain, the PBL class achieved a significantly higher adjusted mean and a small-to-medium effect size compared to the lecture-based class, suggesting that PBL has a relative advantage in enhancing students’ interest in software and their engagement in the course.
