Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution of question types presented in the fifth-grade Earth and Space units 「Strata and Fossils」 and 「Weather and Our Lives」 of the 2022 revised elementary science teacher’s guides, according to cognitive level and instructional purpose across lesson stages, thereby identifying structural tendencies and educational implications. For this purpose, five authorized teacher’s guides accompanying nationally approved textbooks were examined and their question types systematically compared and analyzed. The findings are as follows. First, in both units, closed questions accounted for the largest proportion, while open questions were relatively limited. Second, across lesson stages, closed questions predominated in the introduction and development phases, whereas open questions increased in the consolidation phase, supporting learner internalization and cognitive expansion. Third, with respect to instructional purpose, comprehension-oriented questions represented the highest proportion, effectively facilitating conceptual understanding and cognitive elaboration. In addition, the increasing use of reflective questions in the consolidation phase suggests attempts to connect learning with real-life contexts and value judgments. In contrast, the introduction and development phases were characterized by a higher proportion of information-eliciting questions, reflecting a focus on procedural guidance and factual recall. These results indicate that while teacher’s guides remain largely knowledge-checking oriented, there is a gradual shift toward incorporating open and reflective questions. This trend underscores the need to balance question types to foster students’ inquiry participation and higher-order thinking.
