Abstract

There has been a serious interest in writings about the Christian spirituality in the Korean churches, roughly from the latter part of the 1980's. Christian spirituality, as we know, aims at Christian perfection by way of purgation of one's faults and sins. In the past, Christian symbolism had contributed to the pursuit of spiritual exercises. It seems, however, that Christian symbolism has lost its validity in contemporary society due to ever-growing materialistic thinking and way of life. Consequently more and more people complain about their mental suffering. The Swiss psychotherapist, C. G. Jung, was one of the great soul carers in our times who knew the core of that suffering. He said that neurosis was self division coming from the unbalanced psyche between many opposites of mental structure. Throughout his life, Jung treated many patients who suffered from the meaninglessness of life not knowing the divine centre of their psyche. So he made every effort to find the main factors of the psycho dynamics : the ego, the persona, the shadow, the anima/animus, the self. The significance of Jungian psychology for Christian spirituality lies in the fact that Jung insisted on the importance of the promoting a development in the realm of human interiority. That is, he always insisted on the importance of the deep dimension of human psyche and its actualization in human life, which he called the process of individuation. Late in his life, he said, "It is indeed high time for the clergyman and the psychotherapist to join forces to meet this great spiritual task." The future of cooperation of the clergyman and the psychotherapist depends on the response of the latter part.
