Abstract

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital malformations that result from maldevelopment of the primitive foregut. They often develop within the mediastinum or lungs along the bronchi, but rarely in the neck. Most of the reported bronchogenic cysts in the neck are found at an young age, but a bronchogenic cyst of the neck is known to be extremely rare in adulthood in literature. Especially, bronchogenic cysts presenting as thyroid tumor are also quite rare. We recently encountered a histopathologically confirmed bronchogenic cyst that was preoperatively considered a thyroid mass. Bronchogenic cysts can occur in the neck of adults and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of anterior neck masses in adults. We report a case of bronchogenic cyst presenting as a thyroid mass in an adult with a brief review of literature. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2006;49:98-101)
