Abstract

Buddhist memorial rites (jaehoe, 齋會) aim to transform ritual spaces into the Buddha’s realm through various ceremonial ornaments, among which banners (beon, 幡) play a significant role. A banner inscribes the names of Buddhas or sages to praise their descent and is widely used in major rites such as the Suryukjae (水陸齋), the Saengjeonyesujae (生前預修齋), the Yeongsanjae (靈山齋), and the Daerye wanggongjae (大禮王供齋) which is known as the prototype of the 49-jae(四十九齋). However, in contemporary practice, banners are often employed merely as decorative objects, with many temples relying on commercially available “ready-made banners” purchased from Buddhist supply shops. This tendency obscures the distinctive purposes of each rite and diminishes the ritual authenticity of banners. This study investigates the original purpose and ritual function of banners in Buddhist memorial rites. By analyzing ritual texts and canonical sources, it identifies the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and sages invoked in representative rites such as Suryukjae, Saengjeon Yesujae, Yeongsanjae, and the Forty-nine Rite. Furthermore, it examines the composition and typology of names inscribed on commercially distributed banners, comparing them with the ritual requirements of each rite. Findings reveal that commercially available banners often fail to correspond to the specific objectives of individual rites, thereby weakening their ritual significance. The study emphasizes the necessity of restoring the authenticity of banner ornamentation by aligning their content with the intended purpose of each rite. By clarifying the ritual legitimacy and uniqueness of banners, this research contributes to the broader understanding of Buddhist ceremonial practices and provides foundational insights for future studies on ritual ornamentation and intangible cultural heritage.
