초록

Sottae-tagi (totem pole performance) refers to certain kinds of performance in which humans or animals climb up a totem pole called sottae or do stunt performance with part of their body propping it up. This study aims to clarify the origin and history of sottae-tagi in Korea and to take a look at the performance as a whole to identify the characteristics of sottae-tagi. The performance is also called dorosimjang (都盧尋橦), which stands for sottae-tagi of the Doro nation. In order to find out how sottae-tagi has been performed, this study examines physical performances of sottae-tagi, performers playing musical instruments, comedy and ssangjulbaeki. Korean sottae-tagi is unique in that it has expanded performance by utilizing a rope tied to the sottae as another performance space. This study also clarifies the differences between ssangjulbaeki and ssangjul-tagi. Depending on how tall the sottae is, how the rope is tied and what the top of the pole looks like, either ssangjulbaeki or ssangjul-tagi may be performed, for ssangjulbaeki is a different kind of the sottae-tagi performance.
