Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean ethnoichthyology in the 19th century. I analyze the scaled fish(鱗類) and the non-scaled fish(無鱗類) of the Jasan Eobo(玆山魚譜) written in 1814 by the theoretical method of ethnobiology to find the indigenous classification system of Korean fish. In the short history of Korean ethnobiology research, the Jasan Eobo is a valuable cultural heritage. It is possible to approach the Korean ethnobiology 200 years ago, and also to keep track of the continuation and change of the Korean ethnobiology from a diachronic perspective. In this paper, three major aspects are examined. First, I raise that it is problematic to identify the biological classification system of the Jasan Eobo as only the categories which appear as cover terms. Second, by examining the non-cover-term categories of the scaled fish and the non-scaled fish, I find an implicit fourth rank of fish classification and add new some fish categories. Third, I present the folk taxonomy of Korean fish, and examine the characteristics of fish classification and the concept of fish in the nineteenth century. Fish in the nineteenth century is defined as animals that have scales and swim in water, and includes shrimp and jellyfish as well as whales and squid. The concept of fish in the past was wider than today. However, the key classification criteria for conceptualizing fish in the nineteenth century are still handed down today.
