Abstract
This study analyzed the growth, heavy metal accumulation, and inorganic component characteristics of seven plant species growing naturally in an abandoned mine contaminated with heavy metals to develop effective plant resources for phytoremediation in polluted environments. The plant height of all species except for Artemisia princeps decreased in the polluted environment, while the dry weight did not decrease. In particular, the dry weight of Erigeron annuus increased 1.2 ~ 2.3 times more in plants grown in contaminated soil. The underground accumulation of arsenic, a toxic heavy metal, was high (94.3 to 136.7 mg kg-1) in Conyza canadensis, Aster koraiensis, and Artemisia princeps. However, the translocation coefficient from the roots to the above-ground was less than 1 in all plants, indicating that most absorbed arsenic accumulated underground. In contrast, the accumulation of zinc was high in Plantago asiatica, Aster koraiensis, and Conyza canadensis, and most of the translocation coefficients were above 1, showing a high degree of transfer to the above-ground part. In most plants, the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium are higher in above-ground parts than underground. Conversely, sodium concentration is higher underground.
