An Identification Key on Some Korean Gymnosperm Sawn Timber: Based on Anatomical Characteristics

The study aims are to create an anatomical key for the sawn timber of 18 species, belonging to seven families and 18 genera of the Korean gymnosperm. After years of the investigation by microscopy, seven characters were preferentially selected, significantly important to identify the wood pieces. They are intercellular canals/resins duct, axial parenchyma, longitudinal tracheid, ray tracheid, ray parenchyma, cross-field fitting, and ray. They were further divided into few more detailed characters, and then their character states were explained together with micrographs. Based on the above data, we create an identification key for some Korean gymnosperm sawn timber. The results of this study are also expected to serve as reference materials for identifying the various wooden household items collected from archaeological sites.
