Abstract

urprised by the March 1st Movement, Japanese imperialism began to change the way of governing Korea. In the name of ‘cultural rule’, various cultural activities of Joseon were guaranteed. In particular, organization establishment and publication of newspapers and magazines became active. The Japanese imperialism focused its efforts on making Confucian scholars into pro-Japanese groups as one of the ways to govern Joseon. As soon as Joseon was merged, Seonggyungwan was changed to Gyeonghakwon. In addition, various Confucian organizations were formed in Gyeongseong and other provinces by easing the standards for establishing Confucian organizations. This paper studies Daedongsamunhoe, a pro-Japanese Confucian group active during the Japanese colonial period, and focuses on the organization, members, and activities of this group. Daedong Samunhoe was the first Confucian organization to be formed during the ‘cultural rule’ period. It was established in January 1920 and was active for approximately five years, but it is important in studying pro-Japanese Confucian organizations active during the Japanese colonial period. Although there are many Koreans who served in the Japanese colonial rule, it will also be meaningful in that it can track the genealogy and activities of pro-Japanese Confucian scholars in that the activities of Confucian scholars, who can be said to be among the highest-ranking, are closely linked to Daedonghaghoe(reformed into Gongjagyohoe) and Imunhoe, a literary club. In addition, Daedongsamunhoe initially focused on the project of returning the property of Hyanggyo to honor sages and build shrines, establishing Daesunghakwon, a liberal arts university centered on Gyeonghak, and holding a memorial service to commemorate the 2400th anniversary of Confucius’ death. This will help to see the whole of Confucian groups such as Yudojinheunghoe, Joseonyugyohoe, and Yugyobusighoe, who worked in Japanese colonial era.
