Abstract
Abstract We have a lot of interests to wearable computer as an IT technology was developed. Aids for disabled person are also developed variously. But, aids for visually impaired person were limited. In this study, we propose an wearable system using multiple ultrasonic sensor array to detect and avoid obstacles for the visually impaired persons. We suggest method to advance the accuracy by optimized arrangement of ultrasonic sensors and have a wide coverage in front of user using a few sensors. Then, the sensors are arranged efficiently so that is not influenced in user's arm and upper body motion when sensor beam scans. After simplifying a complex spatial structure into some patterns, we can determine an avoidance direction by estimating the patterns. User can get information of space without another person's help and recognize whether walk to right direction. Therefore, visually impaired person can free walk.
