Abstract
Fog computing is a new paradigm that has emerged to solve the network traffic problem arising from cloud server based IoT systems. Most of the current fog computing research provide fog nodes with capability of storing IoT data. This is not enough to replace the central server's role for IoT systems. Unlike the previous research, the DDS (Data Distribution Service) based fog platform, DFog (EchoDDS Fog Platform) introduced in this paper, not only stores IoT device data, but also monitors the state of the IoT device and manages the devices realtime without user or administrator intervention as needed. In addition, by providing a remote control function to enable administrators to connect and monitor individual IoT devices through a central server, it is applicable to large-scale IoT systems. Furthermore, the performance and scalability of fog nodes are improved by applying DDS, a publishing/subscription-based communication middleware which forms a flexible network of fog nodes and servers. Prototype IoT systems were implemented using DFog in order to confirm feasibility of these functions and performances.
