Abstract

Automatic analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) data is crucial for the diagnosis of a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and it can help improve the efficiency of medical doctors’ tasks. Recently, portable and wearable ECG devices with a few of channels have been developed, and artificial intelligence-based techniques for disease diagnosis have been proposed in the literature. However, there is lack of studies investigating the effects of choosing lead counts and preprocessing methods on class-wise prediction performance. In this study, we utilized 12-lead ECG data provided by the PhysioNet 2021 Challenge and evaluated the performance of multi-label classifiers based on 1D ResNet convolutional neural network (CNN) models. We compared the prediction performance with a variety of lead choices (i.e., 12-lead, 6-lead, 4-lead, 3-lead, 2-lead) and preprocessing methods including no preprocessing, Pan-Tompkins filtering, and discrete wavelet transform. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that differences in class-wise F1-scores for the choice of lead counts and preprocessing methods were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Compared to a fixed threshold setting, a class-dependent threshold setting improved macro F1-score from 0.448 to 0.4644 for the choice of the 2-lead and Pan-Tompkins preprocessing method. In order to promote reproducibility for comparative studies using multi-label ECG data, we provide source code at https://github.com/shjee20/1D-ecg
