Background : Various pro-inflammatory cytokines are released by endothelium and leukocytes, which may contribute to the development or progression of atherosclerosis. Serum concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines are increased in patients with atherosclerosis. However, it is unclear whether such increases correlate with the extents of carotid stenosis. Objective : This study evaluated to know the relationship between circulating levels of IL (interleukin)-6, MCP (monocyte chemotatic protein)-1, and IFN (interferon)-gamma and the severity of carotid stenosis. Methods : Serum was obtained from 41 patients with carotid stenosis. The degree of extracranial carotid artery was calibrated by carotid B-mode ultrasonography. Concentrations of IL-6, MCP-1, and IFN-gamma were measured by an enzyme-link immunosorbent assay. Results : The serum concentrations of IL-6 (r=0.54, p < 0.01) and MCP-1 (r=0.62, p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with the extents of extracranial carotid artery stenosis. However, the serum concentration of IFN-gamma (r=0.18, p > 0.05) had no relationship with the degree of extracranial carotid stenosis. Conclusions : These findings suggest that increased serum levels of IL-6 and MCP-1 constitute an inflammatory signature of the severity of extracranial carotid stenosis.
