Department of Neurology, College of Medicine, Seoul National University* Department of Neurology, Ilsan Paik Hspital, Inje University** Background: Transcranial doppler (TCD) is a useful diagnostic tool for evaluating various cerebrovascular diseases. Although TCD is widely used in various cerebrovascular diseases, the variability between TCD instruments has been neglected. To assess the difference between TCD instruments, we evaluated various parameters including flow velocity. Methods: A total of 67 patients were included in this study. Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and TCD were performed in all patients. The patients were categorized into the nomral MRA group or abnormal MRA group according to the MRA finding of middle cerebral artery (MCA). The values of MCA were analyzed between two different TCD instruments (TransScan(EME, Germany) and Spencer 100M). Results: In the group of normal MRA, the flow velocity of MCA between two different instruements was significantly different. In the group of abnormal MRA, the flow velocity and pulsatility index showed significant difference between the two instruments. Conclusions: Because the flow velocity value can be different between TCD instruments, we must be cautious in interpreting the TCD results and more extensive basic database must be constructed for each instrument.
