Introduction The basic concept of recanalization treatmentof acute ischemic stroke is early removal ofthrombi occluding the cerebral vessels beforethe ischemic brain tissue injured irreversibly.The mission can be achieved by mechanicaland/or pharmacologic methods. Figurativelyspeaking, it is a battle with thrombi. To win thebattle we need to know about the thrombuswhich is composed largely of platelet aggregatesand fibrin networks. Traditionally fibrinolyticshave been applied as the primary pharmaceuti-cals, which are not always successful regardlessof the delivery methods. Theoretically approach-ing both aspects, fibrinolysis and antiplateletaction, will be more efficient because they maypotentiate the clot lysis. This paper will brieflyreview a relatively recent antiplatelet drug,platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptor antag-onist which can be used in that purpose togeth-er with fibrinolytics. For the convenience, theaction of platelets in the formation of thrombuswill be reviewed shortly first.
